Our SEO company has a variety of clients, and their understanding of SEO and internet marketing ranges from pretty impressive (especially for a non-SEO professional) to well, not so impressive (hey, that is what they pay us for).  Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of the common questions clients ask about the search engine optimization process, along with some relatively-jargon free answers.

Question #1:  How soon we will see results?  When will we be on page one?

Everyone wants to be on page one yesterday, however, ranking organically can take some time, especially for popular queries.  Furthermore, the first thing that any internet marketing company needs to do is make sure the website they are optimizing provides the best possible user experience, because after all, it doesn’t matter how much traffic a site generates if its usability is lacking.  However, even if the site was created by a top web design company, it can take several months for a site to reach the first page, particularly for highly competitive keywords.

Question #2:  How are my keywords selected?  Why those words?  Why can’t I go after more keywords?

We’ve written about the keyword selection process before, but when our SEO company works with clients to determine the best possible keywords for their target market, we aim for a blend of popularity (the words and phrases people are actually typing into the query box), relevancy (how closely do those describe the website we are optimizing) and of course, viability – sometimes ranking for multiple less competitive terms can drive more traffic in the long run, and obviously very general terms are not only more difficult, they actually end up sending unfocused visitors that don’t convert.

In regard to the amount of keywords targeted, we feel it is best to start with the most precise terms first (usually five or so different ones) and expand our list from there once we’ve ranked highly for those.

Question #3:  Why does my site need incoming links?  What is link building?

Even if a client or potential clients understands that their website code needs to be structured correctly and contain the right components in order to be completely crawled by the search engines, they might not be aware of the importance of off-site SEO and link-building.  Of course, any decent search engine optimization company understands that the search engines love sites with lots of high quality incoming links and rank them accordingly, but it is key to explain to clients and potential clients that trusted authority websites typically dominate the SERPs (the search engine results pages).
